For years, for years I’ve been saying “Elle we’ve got to go to New Zealand!” She’d humor me and say, “sure put it on the list” as if that would placate me. Well, all it took to get her fully committed to the idea was seeing the pictures from a co-worker’s recent trip. Sheesh, I could have done that. Now, she’s vested in the idea of spending upwards of 18 hours and change flying to the near absolute other side of the globe so I can recreate my own adventures in Middle Earth and we’re saving money for our eventual trip!
Evidently, one of the smarter, more cost-effective ways to see NZ is to rent a camper and drive from the North Island to the South Island. Now, this, this is certainly something I can get behind! We did a little couch travel this evening and researched one possible option.
Mighty Campers is a car hire company that rents, you guessed it, campers for travelers to ply the highways and byways of Middle Earth in search of the One Ring of Power, or cheap beer and incredible vistas. Rental options include the diminutive Lowball, which is based on a Mitsubishi Delica van all the way up to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based Double Up.
For our needs, I’d say the aptly named Deuce, which includes a toilet, would do just fine indeed. Prices are pretty reasonable too! For a 14 day rental it would come out to about $1,500 USD, plus the cost of diesel and foodstuffs for the larders. Really, it would work out to about $150 USD per day for the two of us to see New Zealand on our own terms, and that ain’t half bad if you ask me!

Completely biased of course, but I loved this post! And I can’t wait to make this a reality.
